The senate has passed the s3xual harassment in tertiary education institution bill, 2016.
A bill seeking a five-year jail term for lecturers in tertiary institutions who use their positions to sexually harass female students is almost on its way to be passed.
It also makes false witnesses and accusers liable for prosecution.
Ovie Omo-Agege, a senator from Delta state, sponsored the bill.
The bill was debated on May 24, and it received the endorsement of many lawmakers.
Leading the debate on the bill when it was being considered for second reading in May, Omo-Agege had argued that sexual harassment was rife in many higher institutions of learning in Nigeria, hence the need for legislation against it.
“Sexual harassment is a vice in our higher institutions. We are using this bill to send a message that enough is enough,” he had said.
Theodore Orji, a senator from Abia state, had also expressed his support for the bill.
“I believe this bill will do enough in curtailing the vice in our higher institutions,” he had said.
While making his contribution, Dino Melaye, a senator from Kogi west, had said that sexual harassment was a two-way traffic.
He had argued that some students wilfully seduce their lecturers with the aim of getting academic favours.
“I support wholeheartedly that this bill be enacted to stand as deterrent to lecturers who take advantage of female students,” he had said.
On Thursday, the upper legislative chamber passed the bill after a consideration of the report of the committee on judiciary, human rights and legal matters.

IMPORTANT: If your name appears on the list of 2016/2017 admitted students in any of the schools, you are advised to check if your admission has reflected on JAMB’s website
The institution’s spokesman, Mr Adekoya Martins, told newsmen in Lagos that LASU received the approved list from Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Monday.
Although Martins was silent on the number of students on the admission list, The National University Commission (NUC) admission quarter for LASU is 8000 candidates.
“The vice-chancellor had said that the university could not admit more than 5,500 new students to avoid stretching the facilities on ground,’’ he said.
He advised candidates who made LASU their first choice to visit the institution’s website to confirm their admission status.
The university spokesman also said that the screening of candidates that made LASU their second choice would begin soon.
He said that the screening was delayed because of JAMB’s lateness in releasing the merit list. Martins urged candidates who failed to make the merit list not to lose hope, adding that such candidates could still be considered in the second or supplementary list.
According to him, candidates who made LASU their first choice but missed the post-University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) exercise can still apply for screening at the institution for the second choice.
The post-UTME screening form for the first choice candidates was sold for N5000, as against N2, 500 recommended by JAMB.
