Smoking remains a popular food preservation method in this part of the world. Smoking develops a lot of flavors in fish that many people have forgotten that smoking should be for preservation, they just want to get that characteristic smoked fish flavor in their mouth.
Is Smoked Fish Dangerous To Your Health? Read an article by Food NG
What is Food Smoking?
Smoking can be simply defined as the process of flavouring, cooking, or preserving food by exposing it to smoke from burning materials. The material most commonly used is wood.
Wood contains three major components — cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, that are broken down in the burning process to form smoke. Typical smoking of fish is either cold (28–32°C) or hot (70–80°C). Hot smoking is what is prevalent around here.
When I talk about smoking in this article, I mean the traditional, common smoking process using smokes from burning woods or wood shavings. Smoking was originally carried out on food (including fish) to preserve them. However, since the advent of freezing and other preservation methods, smoking is now mostly done to develop the unique taste and flavour imparted by the smoking process.
So, is smoking of fish dangerous to human health?
Honestly, there is no straight answer to this caution and one has to tread the line of caution when advising people. One cannot just say smoked fish is dangerous to health. No.
The main potential danger associated with smoking of fish and other foods is PAH. When wood is burned, Polycylclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH)—a class of carcinogens—are formed. These are deposited on foods and are known to cause cancer. You would recall I mentioned this in this article.
However, when people talk about whether smoking of food is dangerous or not, some forget to take the dose into consideration. Yes, PAHs are dangerous, there is no doubt about that but the dose that we take in will determine if it will lead to the onset of cancer or not.
Generally, foods smoked commercially in a manufacturing facility have been found to contain lower levels of PAHs compared to those smoked in noncommercial settings. An example of the latter is those we by in many open markets, displayed in the open and wrapped in nylons or papers when we purchase. There is no way to determine the level of PAHs in this, unless the necessary tests are carried out.
Since, we cannot test those fishes before buying them, we cannot determine if they contain low or the level of dose that has been found to be harmful to experimental animals.
If you ask me, I’d say you should enjoy your smoked fish with caution. If you are someone that only enjoys an occasional smoked fish meal—and are not a daily consumer—then PAH from smoked fish and other foods is most likely not a health concern for you.
This photo of church poster have gone viral online just because of the name.
The photo shows a church poster being displayed in Benin City, Edo State, obviously as a way of getting new members and directing them to the church with a stand out name called “EFCC Church” and in this era of anti-corruption campaigns, anything related to the EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Comission) catches attention easily.
A closer look at that the church shows it is not affiliated to the anti-corruption body but it own full meaning is : “Emerald Fellowship Christian Centre.”
Tilapia is everyone’s favorite. It’s inexpensive, doesn’t have that fishy taste, it’s boneless, skinless, and you can easily cook it.
But could there be a dark side to tilapia? Apparently, Yes! Tilapia has been found to be even more disastrous for your health than some of the more notorious meats like beef and pork.
Wild tilapia eat a delicious diet of algae and various plants, but most of the tilapia in the store doesn’t come from the wild – they come from factory farms, where tilapia are fed an unnatural, unhealthy diet of GMO corn and soy pellets.
Why can’t you eat farmed-raised Tilapia?
Farm-raised tilapia has been shown to cause aggravation in the body like asthma, joint inflammation, coronary disease, and a host of other problems.
Additionally, farmed fish contain ten times the normal amount of carcinogenic, or cancer causing agents as fish found in the wild. It’s no different for tilapia.
These kinds of fish also have higher amounts of pesticides in them, as pesticides are used to treat the fish for infections while being farmed and often remains contained in their bodies after harvesting.
Another concern is the high level of Dioxin in farmed fish. Dioxin is a lethal substance that, once in your system, can take up to a decade to leave your body. Dioxin levels are 11 times higher in farmed fish than in wild fish.
Did you know that chicken poop is one of the primary ingredients in ranch fish feed? Do you really want to eat chicken poop on your fish? Because if you buy it from the store, you basically are.
So next time you’re at the store, it might be best for you to leave the tilapia on the shelf.
A healthy vag!na is acidic in nature and contains beneficial bacteria that help fend off infections and maintain a normal pH level. Any kind of vag!nal problem can cause irritation or infection and lot of discomfort.
Keeping the vag!na healthy is not a difficult task. All it takes is practicing proper hygiene, eating a healthy diet, wearing proper clothing, exercising daily and managing stress.
It’s also important to know what is harmful to your vag!nal health. Treat your vag!na right, and it will have great benefits to your overall health.
Here are 10 things you should never do to your vag!na.
Douching means to wash out the vag!na, usually with a mixture of water and vinegar. There are many over-the-counter d0uches in the market that contain antiseptics and fragrances, which can be harmful for the vag!nal health.
Many women do d0uching to feel fresher, get rid of unpleasant odors, wash away menstrual blood after a period, and to avoid getting s3xually transmitted diseases (STDs) and prevent pregnancy after interc0urse.
In fact, researchers analyzed several studies on vag!nal douching and concluded that it is not necessary or beneficial and is very likely to be harmful.
D0uching can disturb the pH level of the vag!na and can lead to an infection. Moreover, your vag!na is self-cleaning, so it doesn’t need douching to make it cleaner. All you need is a proper wash with some warm water to keep it clean.
2. Vag!nal Steaming
Most spa centers claim that vag!nal steaming improves female hygiene and balances hormones. But in reality, it does more harm than good.
It can burn the sensitive skin in and around your vag!na. If the burn is severe, it can cause harm to your bladder and rectum, too. Plus, steam can be drying and disrupt the balance of natural bacteria that live in your vag!na and increase your risk of a yeast infection. And as hormones are not produced by the uterus or the vag!na, it is totally wrong to state that vag!nal steaming can lead to a hormonal balance in the body.
When it comes to genital piercing, the two most common areas are the clitoris or clitoris hood and the outer or inner labia. No matter where the piercing is done, the vag!na is a sensitive area and piercing can cause severe pain and nerve damage.
Plus, it creates an opening in the body, thus increasing the chance of skin irritation as well as infection.
4. Wearing Underwear that’s Too Tight
Underwear should fit comfortably and never be too tight. Tight underwear promotes chafing of the skin and vag!nal irritation.
On top of that, tight underwear puts you at an increased risk of yeast infections because it allows for heat and moisture to build up in your vag!nal area, which creates an ideal setting for bacteria to grow.
5. Pubic Hair Removal
Whether you prefer shaving, waxing or hair removal creams, none are good for your sensitive skin. Moreover, removal can also increase your risk of contracting an STD.
Pubic hair removal can increase your chance of contracting an STD because removing the hair affects the skin membrane, making it easier for bacteria to enter the body.
Pubic hair has a purpose. It absorbs moisture and protects the area down there from infections, such as herpes and genital warts. So, instead of getting rid of the hair completely, trimming it from time to time is a good option.
6. Scented Soaps or Perfumes
Use of both scented soaps and perfumes in the vag!nal area are not recommended. Using such products can lead to infection and irritation, due to the presence of chemicals and other synthetic ingredients in them. Scented dryer sheets, scented sprays, deodorants and deodorizing wipes are also not recommended.
Water, just plain lukewarm water, is fine for keeping your vag!na clean. Never use very hot water, as it can cause irritation and make the skin extremely dry. If you are using feminine washes, bear in mind they are for external use only. You must not use them inside the vag!na!
The smell of the vag!na is often related to a disturbed pH balance, which you can correct with a proper diet. If your vag!na smells particularly foul, there may be a medical reason behind it and you should consult your doctor.
7. Using Pads or Tampons for too long
Maintaining hygiene during menstruation is very important, and you must change your pad or tampon frequently.
The pH of menstrual blood is higher than healthy vag!nal pH. The longer you use the same pad or tampon, the greater is the risk of vag!nal infection. It can even cause toxic shock syndrome, a life-threatening condition caused by certain types of bacterial infections.
Change your tampon frequently, at least every 4 to 8 hours. Don’t use pads for longer than necessary and change them as often as you need to feel comfortable and clean. Also, avoid using them after your menstruation is over, as it can lead to skin irritation.
8. Petroleum Jelly
Many people find petroleum jelly to be an easy form of lubricant, but this is something you should avoid putting in your vag!na.
Your vag!nal area is very sensitive, and any petroleum jelly can throw off your pH balance and make you susceptible to infection or irritation.
9. Popping of Pubic Acne
No matter how painful or uncomfortable your pubic acne may be, puncturing or breaking the pimples is never a good idea. When you puncture the pimple’s outer skin, the pus oozes out with all the bacteria in it. If these harmful bacteria reach other skin pores, it can lead to more pimples.
Breaking the acne can even force the debris and bacteria deeper into your skin, causing more redness, inflammation and swelling on the affected area. This may even lead to permanent scarring.
Also, if the acne-prone area itches, try not to scratch. It can cause serious irritation.
It is best to allow the acne to run its course. When left alone, acne will heal within a week or two.
10. Sharp Objects Inside
The blood supply to the inside of the vag!na is very rich and putting anything inside it increases the risk of a tear or cut. Even a small tear can cause incredible amounts of bleeding.
Plus, putting any unsanitary item up there increases the risk of an infection or irritation.
According to a woman, she has a husband who is just too promiscuous, the man has even slept with girls in his street, estate and even their church for that matter.
Below is how she told the story:
That certain point of the month when you have your period can be characterized as disturbing at best and downright scary at worst. Symptoms such as depression or irritation, bloating and mood swings, breast tenderness, and even painful cramps are common.
While you are having your period it’s important to take care of yourself and give your body the nutrition it needs. When you’re focusing on lean proteins and fiber, you can help regulate your blood sugar levels and replenish your body’s supply of iron.
Staying healthy while on your period means eating healthy. That also means avoiding foods that might worsen your symptoms. Here are five examples below of foods you should avoid while on your period:
#1 Processed Foods
– Generally speaking, processed canned foods contain very high levels of sodium. Excessive levels of sodium cause increased water retention that can lead to additional bloating.
#2 Fatty Meats
– High saturated fats contained in fatty meats can cause inflammation and pain that will worsen the effects of menstrual cramps. Instead of pork or beef, try eating fish and lean meats during your period.
#3 Commercial Baked Goods
– Baked goods contain large amounts of trans-fats that can increase estrogen levels in women. This increased hormone production can lead to sharp pains inside the uterus.
– Caffeinated food and drinks are stimulants that can lead to irregular periods and increased cramping. Other side effects of caffeine intake during periods are sleeping difficulties, agitated mood swings, and even additional menstrual cramping pain.
#5 Alcohol – Alcoholic drinks act as blood thinners, increasing your flow which can lead to additional discomfort. The consumption of alcohol can also increase cramping due to dehydration and affect mood swings leading to depression.
Let’s face it, being on your period can be miserable. The good news is that by avoiding certain foods you can help lessen the symptoms you experience.

Wife of the Benue State Governor, Mrs. Eunice Ortom, has appealed to Tor Tiv-elect, Prof. James Ayatse, to review bride-prices in Tiv land, to enable young men get married “when due”.
Ortom made the appeal on Tuesday, when she paid a courtesy visit to the Tor Tiv-elect in Makurdi. She decried the high demands made on young men seeking to marry Tiv daughters, and described the situation as “very discouraging”.
“Such high demands discourage many bachelors from even attempting to get married; the result is that many young girls cannot find husbands,” she said.
The governor’s wife argued that such exorbitant charges were not part of Tiv culture.
“Such charges are imported; our traditional rulers should discard them,” she said.
While noting that bride-price payment was sacrosanct in every marriage, she cautioned parents against selling their daughters “especially since the relationship between in-laws remains, long after such marriage rites”.
She regretted that many young men now preferred to elope with their loved ones owing to such huge monetary demands, and stressed the need to make the process affordable so as to restore the sanctity of the marriage institution.
Ortom pledged her support to the new monarch, saying that his emergence was an act of God that would bring unity to the Tiv nation.
Responding, the traditional ruler promised to work toward a united Tiv nation, and promised to be truthful, transparent and promote the fear of God at all times.
He also promised to uphold valuable cultural practises and repeal negative ones.
Ayatse decried the politics of rancour and acrimony in Tiv land, and promised to reconcile Tiv sons and daughters toward building a united front.
The terrorist Boko Haram group recruited about 2,000 children in 2016 and used them as child soldiers, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has said.
UNICEF Executive Director, Anthony Lake, disclosed this on Tuesday as global leaders gather in Paris on the anniversary of the Paris Commitments to end the use of children in conflict.
Lake said estimates indicated that tens of thousands under the age of 18 were being used in conflicts worldwide.
According to the UNICEF chief, exact data on the number of children used and recruited in armed conflict is difficult to ascertain because of the unlawful nature of child recruitment.
“For instance, since 2013 an estimated 17,000 children have been recruited in South Sudan and up to 10,000 have been recruited in the Central African Republic (CAR).
“Similarly, nearly 2,000 children were recruited by Boko Haram, in Nigeria and neighbouring countries, last year alone, and there have been nearly 1,500 cases of child recruitment in Yemen since the conflict escalated in March 2015.
“We cannot give up the fight to end child recruitment,” the UNICEF chief said.
According to him, even though over the past 10 years, more than 65,000 children have been released from armed forces and armed groups, tens of thousands of boys and girls under the age of 18 continue to be used in conflicts around the world.
“It is not only about looking back at what has been accomplished – but looking forward to the work that remains to be done to support the children of war,” he said.
Adopted 10 years ago, the Paris Commitments, together with the Paris Principles and Guidelines, lay out guidance for protecting children from recruitment and use by armed forces or armed groups.
The Paris Agreement also assists the release of child soldiers and their reintegration, with other vulnerable children affected by armed conflict in their communities.
“There has also been progress: since it was adopted, the number of countries endorsing the Paris commitments has nearly doubled from 58 countries in 2007 to 105 at present, signalling an increasing global commitment to end the use of children in conflict.
“Globally, more than 65,000 children have been released from armed forces and armed groups, including 20,000 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
“Nearly 9,000 in the Central African Republic; and over 1,600 children in Chad. But more needs to be done,” the UNICEF chief said.
According to him, seeking to build on the current momentum, the Paris International Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Children in Armed Conflicts is urging for unconditional release of all children – without exception – and putting an end to child recruitment.
“It is also calling for increased resources to help reintegrate and educate children who have been released, and urgent action to protect internally displaced children, child refugees and migrants.
“As long as children are still affected by the fighting, we cannot give up the fight for the children,” Lake added.
